Brian Dahlberg
Dalberg was born in 1944 in Ashburton. He was a pupil of Louise Henderson and studied landscape, portraiture and the figure. He refers to his work as a personal style of ‘regional realism’. An air of surrealism pervades his landscapes and a quality of stillness that is meditative. As in the landscapes paintings of Peter Siddell, the absence of people is noted and this helps to create a sense of isolation and remoteness, characteristic of areas around Cass in Central Otago.
The smooth, undulating lines of the landscape nicely counterpoise the strong outlines of the buildings, which are thrown into sharp relief in the bright, clear light. The cows paused in their feeding; however, imply an unseen viewer in this pristine landscape.
Dahlberg has been the recipient of numerous awards and is represented in galleries throughout New Zealand. He has exhibited in Australia and is represented in Embassies and private collections in the US, Canada, Switzerland, Japan, Holland, and the U.K.
