Marc Blake is a New Zealand-born artist whose work continues to explore concepts of personal and collective memory, history and experience.

Painting since 1999, his original pictorial style reflects the influence of four years spent living, working and exhibiting in Japan. This formative time included a 2 month studio residency & exhibition at BankART NYK in Yokohama, selection as a finalist for exhibition in the 3rd Annual 2005 Amuse Art jam at the Kyoto Cultural Museum, as well as the ongoing video documentation of traditional irezumi (tattoo) artist, Horimyo.

Marc's completely unique interaction with the natural characteristics of the woodgrain is an ongoing conceptual and technical development, which besides stimulating ideas for the composition and even suggesting entire landscapes, completely reinterprets the traditional painting relationship between support, ground, background, foreground and image. Similarly, his original working process and use of tracing techniques, graphic media and paint, combines and blurs many of the common distinctions between both drawing and painting.

Since returning to New Zealand at the end of 2006, Marc continues to exhibit in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Melbourne. His work features in numerous collections throught the country, including the James Wallace Art Trust. He has also been an exhibiting finalist in the COCA Anthony Harper Contemporary Art Award and the New Zealand Painting & Printmaking Awards.
