Selling art online is easy. Here's how it works...
Register
Before you can submit an artwork for auction, you must first register online. Registration is free.
Submit an Artwork for Auction Appraisal
Now click on the Auction Appraisal tab at the top the page. You will be required to fill in detailed and accurate information about the artwork such as the artist, title, medium, exact dimensions, the condition of the artwork, its provenance, and your desired reserve. You will then need to attach 3 digital photographs of the artwork. These must be clear, high-resolution images (at least 3 mega pixels) and cropped to fit the descriptions below:
- the exact image
- the image including its frame
- a close up of the artist's signature
You may enter up to 10 additional images of the artwork, for example any inscriptions, the back of the artwork, or any particular detail of interest.
Once you have filled in the required fields, click “submit” to proceed. Your artwork will then be appraised by one of our auction appraisal specialists who will send you an email response within a few working days. The email response will inform you whether your artwork has been accepted, which auction category it has been accepted into, the auction dates, start price, and our recommended auction estimate and reserve. Please note, the start price is set well below the reserve.
What's an Auction Estimate?
An auction estimate is a range of prices (eg NZ$3,500 - 4,500) that a specialist from FISHERSONLINEART.COM considers an artwork might bring at auction. Auction estimates are based solely on the images and information supplied in the auction appraisal form (or contract to sell) by the seller. The auction estimate range attributed to the item does not constitute a formal appraisal of the fair market value of property and is not generally suitable for insurance or other purposes. Our auction estimates are solely for personal information and may not be relied upon, copied, or distributed for any purpose without prior written consent.
What's a Reserve?
A reserve is the minimum price the seller is willing to accept for the artwork, and below which the artwork will not be sold. This reserve is confidential and must be set at or below the low auction estimate. Unless otherwise indicated, property sold through FISHERSONLINEART.COM is offered subject to a reserve.
If you agree to the value placed on the artwork and our terms & conditions tick the “I accept” box at the foot of the email and you will be prompted to pay the applicable listing fee.
Listing Fee
A listing fee is charged for each artwork that has been accepted for auction by FISHERSONLINEART.COM and confirmed for entry by the seller through the email consent form. The listing fee is payable by credit card online through our secure banking provider.
The listing fee is dependent on the reserve:
- If the reserve is less than or equal to NZ$3000 the listing fee is NZ$20
- If the reserve is greater than NZ$3,000 the listing fee is NZ$50
- If the reserve is greater than NZ$20,000 the listing fee is NZ$100
- If the artwork is listed in a Feature Auction the listing fee is NZ$50 (unless otherwise specified)

Auction Categories
FISHERSONLINEART.COM has three auction categories:
- Continuous Affordable Art Auction – featuring artworks with a reserve of less than $3,000
- Continuous Fine Art Auction – featuring artworks with a reserve of greater than or equal to $3,000
- Regular Feature Auctions - featuring selected artworks united by a theme (eg “Blue Chip”, “Abstraction”, or “Photography”).
Our scheduled Feature Auctions are posted on our Online Auction Calendar. Please send us an email if you have an artwork that you would like to include in one of our Feature Auctions. Suitable artworks submitted through the auction appraisal process will also be invited into a Feature Auction in our initial email response.
During the Online Auction
Each artwork is auctioned for 10 days. If there are competing bids as the auction is closing, the auction will auto-extend in 2 minute increments.
During the auction period, registered users may bid on the artwork, ask the seller a question, or add the artwork to his or her watchlist. Users are also able to visit the artist's biography and past auction sales results to find out more about the artist they are interested in.
After the Auction Closes
Soon after the close of the auction, FISHERSONLINEART.COM will email the seller a post-sale notification listing the final successful bid or, in the event that the artwork failed to sell, a notification that the artwork did not reach reserve. The successful bidder will be sent an email confirming that he or she has won the auction, and an invoice for the total purchase price.
Seller’s Commission
If your artwork sells, a seller's commission of 8% + GST will be charged on the hammer price. This amount will be deducted from the sales proceeds and appear on the seller’s remittance advice statement.
Reserve Not Met
If the reserve is not met, the seller will be sent email notification that the artwork did not reach reserve. The email will enable the seller to:
- Accept the highest bid below the reserve.
- Offer the artwork for a fixed price. All users who bid on the artwork or placed the artwork on their watch list will be sent an email notifying them of this offer.
- Re-list the artwork free of charge.
Payment
FISHERSONLINEART.COM will arrange for the buyer’s payment of the total purchase price on behalf of the seller. Payment of the net sales proceeds will be remitted to the seller at the end of the month following payment of the total purchase price by the buyer – provided that FISHERSONLINEART.COM has received the total purchase price from the buyer in cleared funds, and the buyer's contractual right of return has expired.
Remittance can be made by either direct deposit into the seller's nominated account, or by cheque. We will contact you post sale to find our how you would like to receive payment. Payment to the seller is accompanied by a remittance advice statement which itemises the seller's commission and any other applicable charges that have been deducted from the hammer price.
FISHERSONLINEART.COM holds payment to the seller until the end of the month following payment to allow for the buyer to exercise his/her contractual right of return as stated in our Terms & Conditions if such a scenario arises.
Right of Return
If upon the receipt of the artwork the buyer finds the artwork to be a "deliberate forgery" the buyer may return the artwork to FISHERSONLINEART.COM within 14 days of receipt, in order to exercise his or her contractual right of return, pursuant to the Internet Terms & Conditions. From this point, investigations may take place in order to determine whether the artwork is a "deliberate forgery".
If the artwork is found to have obvious "physical imperfections" that were not disclosed by the seller or were not obvious in a careful viewing of enlarged images of the artwork the buyer may return the artwork to FISHERSONLINEART.COM within 48 hours of receipt in order to exercise his or her contractual right of return, pursuant to the Internet Terms & Conditions.
Packaging, Insurance, and Freight
Artworks consigned to FISHERSONLINEART.COM remain in the possession of the seller until sold - preventing the need for sellers to unnecessarily transport their artwork(s) until a sale is made.
For artworks sold in the Affordable Art category, the contact details of the buyer and seller are exchanged after payment has been made by the buyer, in order for delivery of the artwork to be arranged between the parties. A normal scenario would be for the seller to package the artwork (see our packaging guidelines) and arrange for delivery, and for the buyer to pay the cost of delivery direct to the seller.
For artworks sold in the Fine Art and Feature Auction auction categories, it is the seller's responsibility to package the artwork and deliver the artwork to the Fishers Fine Art gallery to closest to them once we have notified the seller that payment has been made. FISHERSONLINEART.COM then arranges for the delivery of the artwork to the buyer - at the buyer's cost - to ensure buyer/seller confidentiality.
